Series: College Bands
From early in their history, Iowa's colleges and academies seemed to have supported music departments and ensembles, although these were often modest affairs involving staffs of one or two full-time instructors and ensembles of twenty or fewer players. Nevertheless, these departments were able to produce skilled performers. During the 1910s and 20s, many of these college musicians were able to play professionally during their summer breaks, mostly in bands that performed multi-week engagements at amusement parks or in small ensembles that toured rural towns of the midwest on the tent chautauqua circuits.
