The images in this series consist of portraits of individuals or small groups of musicians who have chosen to have their photographic portraits made with their instruments and band uniforms. That they have chosen to be photographed in this way is indicative of how important membership in a band was to their identity. This pride of membership, morever, is apparent in their bearing and facial expressions.
Most of these images exist as cabinet cards - small prints of approximately 3 x 5 inches mounted on a decorative piece of card stock. The cabinet card could be framed or stood up in a cabinet or bookcase. If we are lucky, some one will have written the subject's name on the back of the card. The name of the photographer and the location of the studio are usually printed or embossed on the front of the card. Although I have relied upon the photographer's stamp to assign a town designation for the image, this does not in fact guarantee that the subject lived and performed in the town in which the picture was taken.
