This photograph of the Algona band was probably taken sometime in the 1890s. Records indicate that a town band was organized as early as 1870, sixteen years after the town's founding in 1854. In 1870, a group of thirteen civic leaders pledged funds for the purchase of instruments to form a town band. It is possible that some of the instruments from this original purchase are included in the picture above.

Movement for Town Band Here Runs Back to 1870

Rummaging among aged documents left by the late Lewis H. Smith, H.E. Rist came across the record of a local civic enterprise of the summer of 1870 which is worth preserving in print as an historical paper. Written in Mr. Smith's hand, it follows:

The undersigned agree to pay the sums set opposite their names to purchase instruments for a brass band to be kept at Algona, Iowa, said instruments to be owned by the subscribers in proportion to the sums sub-subscribed severally. The instrument to be placed in the hands of Edson William, Frank Nicoulin, Robert B. Warin, W.H. Warner, F.W. Butterfield, Hugh Waterhouse, L. Thomas, Victor Stough, Frank Call, Samuel Plumley, M.M. Dammon, Geo. R. Davis. The instruments to remain in the hands of the above named musicians as long as they shall play in the band. All vacancies in the band shall be filled by remaining members of the band subject to the approval of a majority of the stock owned in the instruments.
