This image shows Fischer's Band, led by J. Henri Fischer of Burlington, Iowa. (Seated in center, with arms crossed.) In addition to leading a popular concert band, Fischer also led the house orchestra at the Burlington Grand Opera House and was a published composer.
This picture was probably taken in the years 1905-10. The band's membership appears to be largely the same as can be seen in the 1907 postcard image of the band below. The photo above would have to have been taken by 1911 at the latest, the year in which Peter Hahn (the cornet player nonchalantly resting his harm on the railing) passed away. No doubt, the band was contracted to provide music for the men in white caps who are also in the picture. However, the specific date, location, and nature of this even remain a mystery at present.
The current Burlington Municipal Band, which was organized in 1927, claims Fischer's Band as one of its direct antecedents. Newspaper accounts have Fischer leading the Burlington municipal band as late as the early 1930s.
