About This Image

Fort Des Moines, located on the south side of Des Moines, has a notable history. During the first World War, Fort Des Moines was given the mission of training all black Army officers in the segregated army of the day. In the second World War, Fort Des Moines trained half of all the women in the Women's Army Corps (WAC). These two postcards are from the latter period, depicting a remarkable bugle megaphone that was used to project the sound of the bugle across the parade ground.
